Almodis of the Mark

Almodis of the Mark (1020 Toulouse side Occitania - 1071, Barcelona) was Countess Consort of Barcelona.

Historical context.

In developing the feudal law (Catalonia) were two women who were a passionate advocates of the Law of the Goths, two countesses of the eleventh century, Ermesenda of Carcassonne and Almodis of the Mark.

She was born in 1020, daughter of Count Bernard I of the Mark and Countess Amelie of Rases. In 1052 she married Count Ramon Berenguer I, grandson of Countess Ermesenda, in third nuptials. It was a very passionate relationship, both left their respective marriages before marrying and being a wedding by choice and not imposed, ie, married for something that was not considered at the time, they married for love.

She was a wise woman, who throughout her life expressed interest and passion for the law. Presiding judgments, like her predecessor, and judges will oath of loyalty. She developed an active policy and diplomatic practice both pacifist and ruled together with her ​​husband, a feudal state. But all this activity did not stop she was murdered by his stepson, Ramon Pedro, which saw jeopardize his inheritance in the hands of the children of Almodis.

Descendants.

By the year 1038 she married Count William III of Arts. Marriage was later annulled by the Church, because of the youth of Almodis.

By the year 1040 he married the Count of Toulouse Pontius. Marriage which she obtained a divorce in 1052. From this marriage were born:

- William IV of Toulouse. Count of Toulouse.

- Ponca. Countess of Cervello.

When she was married to Pontius, the Count of Barcelona (Ramon Berenguer I) abducted her and became his third wife in 1052. From this marriage were born:

- Ramon Berenguer II. Count of Barcelona.
- Berenguer Ramon II. Count of Barcelona.
- Sancha of Barcelona. Countess of Cerdanya and Berga.

Political life.

Ramon Berenguer's grandmother, the Countess Ermesenda, opposed the marriage of her grandson with Almodis and made ​​the Pope gave them the excommunication. A civil war that did not end until 1057, year in which Ermesenda decided to accept her grandson's wife and retire from public life then triggered. This matrimonial alliance brought about Languedoc rights, reaffirming the relationship between the House of Barcelona with the lands beyond the Pyrenees. Almodis that when she married for the third time was already a mature, experienced woman (and remarkable cultural training) participated in the government helping her husband in buying the rights to the county of Carcassonne.

She was killed by his stepson, Ramon Pedro, on 16 November 1071 by inheritance reasons. Almodis inheritance passed undivided to his twin sons: Ramon Berenguer and Berenguer Ramon. She is buried with her husband at the Cathedral of Barcelona.
