Violant of Hungary.

(Hungary, 1216 - Aragon, 1251) was a Hungarian princess and Queen Consort of Aragon, Majorca and Valencia, and Countess consort of Barcelona and Lady of Montpellier.

In 1234, at the proposal of Pope Gregory IX, was stipulated her marriage to King Jaime I "The Conqueror". As agreed in the marriage contract, the bride brought a lot of gold, the rights of the County of Flanders and the territories that her grandparents had in Nemours and Burgundy. None of this came to be paid and Jaime assigned her the Lordship of Montpellier, the barony of Omeladès and Viscounty Millau, for the maintenance of her home.

The wedding caused a sensation in Europe, was held on September 8, 1235 at the Cathedral of Barcelona. 

Violant was the second wife of the Aragonese monarch, with whom he had nine or ten children:

- Princess Violant of Aragon. Queen Consort of Castile. 
- Princess Constance of Aragon. Lady of Escalona, ​​Peñafiel and Villena. 
- Princess Sancia of Aragon. She died in Jerusalem on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Public activity.

Violant was a woman of talent and character. Next to James I, had an important role in the politics of the Crown of Aragon. She was the most important counselor. for the king, on which exerted a strong influence, despite the king's mistresses had during their marriage

She intervened decisively in important international agreements such as the Treaty of Almirra to sign the surrender of the city of Valencia, where she entered triumphantly with her husband. In the projected partition of the kingdom, she always tried to encourage their own children and antagonize the monarch with Crown Prince Alphonsus, son of the first marriage of "El Conquistador" with Eleanor of Castile.

Death and burial.

Violant died of fever in the Shrine of Sala, in 1251. Probably the infected his son, Prince Ferdinand, whom she had been looking until he died.

She chose to be buried in the Monastery of the Nuns Vallbona, of which she was a benefactor. His funerary monument, attached to the right wall of the chancel, is of great sobriety. The tomb, raised on two decorated pilasters with gold crosses paths inscribed in circles gules, has brownstone box and cover, two springs, white stone. The only ornamentation is a cross in the center of the cover and three shields with the royal arms of her husband.
