Eleanor of Castile and Danmartin. Infanta of Castile, was the second of three children of the marriage between Ferdinand III, king of Castile and Joan of Danmartin, Countess ofpoithieu.
On October 18, 1254 married at the monastery of Las Huelgas with Prince Edward of England. The original intent of this marriage was to seal the peace between King Henry III of England and King Alfonso X of Castile, Eleanor's half brother. The death of Henry III, Eleanor and her husband, Edward was proclaimed king and queen of England, but the coronation took place when they returned from the Crusades. In the Holy Land, Eleanorwas a devoted and loyal companion to the point that, according to legend, she came tosave the life of her husband sucking the poison of a snake that had bitten Edward.
Eleanor accompanied her husband, not only in the Crusades, but in the conquest of Wales, giving birth to the youngest of her 15 children, Edward (later Edward I),Caernarfon Castle, in the heart of Wales.
