Philippa of Hainault. Queen Philippa of England

Philippa of Hainault was born in the town of Valenciennes, in the year 1314, one of the 9offspring of the marriage between William I of Hainaut, Count of Hainaut, Holland and Zealand, and Joan of Valois, Princess of France.

She married in the city of York, on 24 January, with King Edward III of England and, unlike many previous queens, she did not take any foreign court, nor did the custom of the country have it.

She accompanied her husband on his expeditions in Scotland and Flanders, being hailed by her great generosity and compassion. She went down in history as that queen of warm hearted and asked her husband on his knees to forgive the Burghers of Calais, which the king thought to run to punish them for their rebellion.

She gave the king 14 children:

- Edward "The Black Prince" (1330 - 1376), Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales.

- Elizabeth (1332 - 1379) Countess of Soissons.

- Jane (1335 - 1348) died on the way to marry King Peter I of Castile.

- William (1337).

- Lionel (1338 - 1368) Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Duke of Clarence.

- John (1340 - 1399) Earl of Richmond.

- Edmund (1341 - 1402) Earl of Cambridge and Duke of York.

- Blanche (1342).

- Mary (1344 - 1362) Duchess of Brittany.

- Margaret (1346 - 1361) Countess of Pembroke.

- William (1348).
